The American breed of rabbit is like its namesake an truly American creation. Developed in Pasadena, California, the breed is a large semi-arch type of rabbit. Recognized by ARBA in two varieties; blue and red-eyed-white, their fur is lustrous and soft, they also tend to have gentle temperaments. Americans are a multi-purpose breed that excels for its uses as a meat animal, fur producer and show specimen.

Americans are usually good mothers and have large litters, 8-10 kits on average. The kits grow quickly and their fast weight gain makes them an excellent alternative to many more common commercial breeds for meat pen projects.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy recognizes the American as "critical." Americans are considered endangered and very rare, there is a great need for new exhibitors and breeders to add them to their barns in order to preserve the breed and prevent it from disappearing entirely.

Max Weight: 12 lbs.

ARBA does not recognize an American breed specialty club at the moment, the former club website may be visited here.
