American Chinchillas are one of 3 ARBA recognized breeds of chinchilla colored rabbits. Americans are the medium sized chinchilla breed, being larger than the Standard Chinchilla but smaller than the Giant Chinchilla. American Chinchillas are a North American breed developed to fulfill not only the fur demand but also make an acceptable meat rabbit.
American Chinchillas are of commercial type, they are a large firm fleshed breed that is characterized by its unique gray coloration that mimics the color of the rodent it is named for. Each strand of American Chinchilla fur is banded, when you blow into their coats the base color closest to the skin is a dark slate blue which is followed by a band of pearl, the next band is black, after is a light colored band and finally the last band is black giving an appearance of wavy ticking throughout the coat.
American Chinchillas make good mothers and usually have large litter sizes averaging 8-10 kits. American Chinchillas make excellent show animals due to their striking color and body type, they also make a nice alternative to more common breeds as a meat pen project. They are listed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as "critical." They are a rare and endangered breed that is in need of new exhibitors and breeders to help protect it from disappearing.
